The first president of the club, Bethuel Mokgsinyane, bought the first ever official kit to be used by the team using his own money in the year 1940 and in the year 1944, the club participated in and won the Division 2 title in the Saturday league of the Johannesburg Bantu association. Their victory led them to be promoted to division 1. The name “Orlando Pirates” was later suggested by Andrew Bassie, who was an important member of the team.
